The Church remembers a number of saints on this day and the following day. These diverse saints are examples of living according to the will of God, and the Church new year is a good time to make changes to bring our own lives closer to what God wants.

Holy Father Simeon Stylite

1 September - Holy Father Simeon Stylite was a hermit monk. Holy Father Simeon Stylite lived most of his life in prayer on a platform atop a large column or tower in the ancient Syrian city of Gerassa near Aleppo, Syria. Many people came to the base of his column or tower to ask for his spiritual advice. Holy Father Simeon Stylite died in the year 459.
Holy Father Simeon Stylite was called "The Stylite" because he retired from the world to the top of a column or tower. The word "Stylite" means "of a Column" or "of the Column".
The walls of Holy Father Simeon Stylite's column or tower may still be seen. This column or tower is called the "Fortress of St Simeon".
A montastery was built close to Holy Father Simeon Stylite's column or tower.

1 September - Holy Martyr Aeithalas was killed in Persia in 355.

Just Joshua son of Nun

1 September - Just Man Joshua was the son of Nun. Just Joshua son of Nun was also a companion of Moses. After the death of Moses, Just Joshua son of Nun became the successor of Moses as leader of God's Chosen People. Just Man Joshua led the Jews into the Promised Land and divided the land among the twelve tribes of Israel.
Just Joshua son of Nun is also called Josue, son of Nave.

Holy Martyr Mammas

2 September - Shepherd Mammas, known for his holiness, was martyred in 275. He is commemorated in celebrated eulogies written by Our Father among the Saints Basil the Great and Our Father among the Saints Gregory the Theologian.

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center is dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles), Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck), and Donna (Donna Bertha Liles Campbell). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000, Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001, and Donna fell asleep in the Lord on March 9, 2020.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
