His Excellency / Archbishop / Sayedna / Sayidna / Joseph (Youssef) Tawil, Eparch of Newton fell asleep in the Lord hoping for the Resurrection to eternal life on February 17, 1999.

On December 25, 1913, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil was born in Damascus, Syria. He studied for the priesthood under the White Fathers. On July 20, 1936, Archbishop Joseph was ordained a priest . Then, he taught at the Patriarchal College in Alexandria, Egypt for seven years. In 1943, he became the President of the College, a position he held for eleven years. Then, he was appointed Patriarchal Vicar in Alexandria. In 1960 he was consecrated a bishop and served as Patriarchal Vicar in Damascus. While in this office, he attended Vatican Council II.

On October 30, 1969, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil was appointed Apostolic Exarch for the United States by Pope Paul VI. He was installed on the following March 15. He succeeded Bishop Justin Najmy, the first Melkite bishop in the United States. Bishop Najmy had died only two years after his installation.
Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil undertook the major task of making diocese. During his 20 years as Eparch, he laid the foundations for the Eparchy of Newton.

In 1989, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil resigned because he had reached the canonical age for retirement, 75. On Dec. 12, 1989, Archbishop Joseph (Youssef) Tawil became Eparch Emeritus at the age of 76.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
