Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center Feast Days and Saints Days

1 November and 1 July - Saints Cosmas and Damian are also called the Holy Wonderworking Physicians Laboring Without Pay. They were born in Asia (probably from Syria or what is now Turkey) in the 4th Century. Cosmas and Damian devoted their lives to healing the sick. They had received from the Lord great skill in healing diseases and they refused to accept money for taking care of people. Tradition tells us that they were brothers and doctors who healed both people and animals with great skill and refused payment for doing so. They are called "unmercenary" or "moneyless" because they refused to accept payment for their healing services. They were constant companions, even in martyrdom by Emperor Maximianus early in the 4th Century. The Roman authorities executed them because they refused to renounce Christ and worship the Emperor. After they died, many miracles of healing were performed through their intercession, and many churches were built in their honor. They have two feast days: July 1 and November 1.

Hieromartyer Clement, Pope of Rome was the second, third, or fourth Pope, after St. Peter and maybe Linus and Anacletus. He composed a long and meaningful letter to the Church of Corinth to settle some difficulties by exhorting them to unity. There is growing evidence, at least, confirming the tradition that this martyr died in exile in Quersoneso (former name of the present capital of Crimea, in Ukraine).
Proceedings from an international congress on the figure of this Pope, held in Rome at the end of November, 2001. The event was organized by St. Clement�s Institute, the Pontifical Academy "Cultorum Martyrum" and the Pontifical Oriental Institute, to commemorate the 19th centenary of the saint�s death. "One of the speakers, professor Natalino Spaccapelo of the Pontifical Oriental Institute, explained why Eastern Christians so love this saint.
"In the year 861, Cyril and Methodius, evangelizers of the Slav peoples, were sent from Constantinople on a diplomatic and religious mission to Quersoneso," Spaccapelo told ZENIT. "While there, they spent time looking for the place of martyrdom and possible relics of St. Clement."
"They found remains and a very solemn celebration was held," he added. "Cyril and Methodius took St. Clement�s relics to Rome in the year 867-868."
The "news of the baptism of Vladimir, prince of Kiev, which took place in the Cathedral of Our Father among the Saints Basil in Quersoneso in 988," is also attributed to the intercession of St. Clement. "That same year, all the people were baptized in the waters of the Dnieper," Spaccapelo continued.
"The prince returned to Quersoneso with his fiancee Ana, sister of the Emperor Basil, and the precious relic of the head of St. Clement. This is how the building of the Church of Christ in the Rus of Kiev came about," he said.
The Rus of Kiev is the historical origin of today�s Russian Orthodox Church.

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center is dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles), Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck), and Donna (Donna Bertha Liles Campbell). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000, Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001, and Donna fell asleep in the Lord on March 9, 2020.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
