6 August - Great Feast of the Transfiguration of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ took The Holy, Glorious and Illustrious Prince of the Apostles Peter, Glorious Apostle John the Theologian and Evangelist , and Holy Apostle James, Brother of John the Evangelist with Him onto Mount Tabor, where He revealed to them His Divine Nature to the extent that human eyes could see it and human flesh could experience it. Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ appeared in His divine glory, transfigured into a figure dazzling with light. The Apostles saw Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ conversing with the Holy Prophet Moses and The Holy Prophet Elias. The Apostles, stricken by the vision of Divine Glory, fell down.
Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ showed them "as much of His glory as they could behold". The Gospel says that they fell stunned on the ground, overcome by the revelation of the Divine Glory in Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Afterwards, Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ strictly told the Apostles not to tell anyone what they had seen.
The hymns for the feast tell us that Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ did revealed to His Apostles His Divine Nature to the extent that human eyes could see it and human flesh could experience it:

  • "...so that having seen You in glory, they would not be dismayed at the time of your suffering..."
  • "...You showed the reality of the resurrection You are to grant us, in your love for humanity and your almighty power as God..."

We celebrate this feast not only as a revelation of the glory of Holy God but also as confirmation of the two natures of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ--both fully Holy God and fully Man.

Our Transfiguration

Each one of us is called to be transfigured--changed by the power of Holy God so that we also shine with divine love and grace.

The Great Feast of the of the Transfiguration of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ and the Great Feast of the Dormition of The Theotokos, on August 15, remind us of our need to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in our own transfiguration toward the holiness and perfection that God created us to share with the Holy Trinity. We work toward this transfiguration by prayer, fasting, and sharing the many gifts God has given us.

Each one of us shares in Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ's divinity just as Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ shares our humanity. Hopefully, we too will ultimately be transfigured to new and perfect life with Holy God in eternity.

Ikon

The Icon of the Transfiguration shows Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ surrounded by the glorious light of His divinity and clothed in the same garments in which He is depicted in all representations of the Resurrection. To Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ's left is Moses, holding the Tablets of the Law, and to His right is The Holy Prophet Elias the Thesbite. Also, the icon shows the disciples fallen and tumbling down the hill, overcome with the dazzling glory of God revealed in Jesus.

KONTAKION (TONE 7)
On the mountain You were transfigured, O Christ our God, and your Disciples saw as much of your glory as they could hold, so that when they should see You crucified, they would know that You suffered willingly, and would proclaim to the world that You are truly the Splendor of the Father.

TROPARION (TONE 7)
You were transfigured on the mountain, O Christ God, showing your Disciples as much of your glory as they could hold. Let your eternal light shine also upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God. O Giver of Light, glory to You.

Antiphon

O Son of God, who were transfigured on Mount Tabor, save us who sing to You. Alleluia.

Feasting

We feast on The Great Feast of the of the Transfiguration of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ even though this Great Feast is during the The Fast for the Great Feast of the Dormition of The Theotokos. The reason is that fasting is forbidden on all Great Feast days with the exception of The Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Holy Cross.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
