Holy Land churches worried about Palestinian prisoner hunger strike

The heads of the churches in the Holy Land have spoken out against the Israeli Government's treatment of Palestinian prisoners in its jails, which is currently the subject of international attention occasioned by an ongoing hunger strike.

According to the statement, carried on the Franciscans International NGO website, Palestinian prisoners claim they have been tortured because they have asked for their freedom and offered resistance to Israeli authorities.

Insisting that the peace process must be resumed, the heads describe the political prisoners as "the first poor in our Land today".

"We declare that no human ethics permit torture to be legal; the human dignity of the political prisoners must be recognised and respected."
