St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople

St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople is one of the Three Great Ecumenical Doctors or Holy Heirarchs or Holy Bishops.
St. John Chrysostom was a great theologian, writer, and orator. He is honored for being the author of a Divine Liturgy and revered as a Doctor of the Church for his profound theological teachings in his sermons (homilies) delivered in Antioch and in Constantinople and his books. Biography

13 November, 25 January, and 30 January - In 344 or 347, St. John Chrysostom was born in Antioch of Syria.
St. John was baptized by Melece, Patriarch / Batiryark of Antioch.
About 374-375, St. John was in the solitudes around Antioch.
He was ordained a deacon in 381 by the same Patriarch and a priest in 386 by Patriarch Flavian. He preached and commented on the entire Bible in the presence of that Patriarch. He served in Antioch.
In 397, St. John was elected patriarch of Constantinople by all the bishops and by order of Emperor Arcadius.
In 398, he was consecrated bishop.
He suffered a series of exiles.
St. John Chrysostom died on Sept. 14, 407, the Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Lifegiving Cross, so the anniversary of his death is celebrated in Nov.

St. John is called "Chrysostom" because he was a great preacher. "Chrysostom" means "golden-mouthed" in Greek. This name was given to him because of his powerful and eloquent preaching. St. John was such a great speaker that the services at which he preached attracted huge crowds seeking inspiration and / or entertainment.

Divine Liturgy

A Divine Liturgy is named after St. John Chrysostom. This Divine Liturgy is celebrated most of the time. In "Great Lent and on very special feasts, the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is celebrated.

Transfer of the Remains of St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople

27 January - In 438, thirty-three years after his death, the Remains of St. John Chrysostom were transferred from Coman of Armenia to Constantinople.

St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom; Great Ecumenical Doctors or Holy Heirarchs or Holy Bishops

30 January - In Constantinople, a quarrel about which of the three theologians was the greatest was happening. In 1100, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom appeared to Patriarch John in a dream and asked him insititute one feast for all of them because they were equal before God.

The grace that shines forth from your mouth like a torch has enlightened the whole universe, bestowed treasures of generosity upon the world, and shown us the eminence of humility. While you teach us by your words, Father John Chrysostom, pray to the Word, Christ our God, that He may save our souls.

30 January - Three Great Ecumenical Doctors or Holy Heirarchs or Holy Bishops (tone1)

Let us all come together to honor with hymn and song the three great satellites of the Holy Trinity, the Sun, enlightening the universe with the beams of their divine doctrine, flowing with honey-like rivers of wisdonm, refreshing deserts with streams of God-knowledge: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, the famous preacher. Let us sing in hymns our love for their teachings, for they constantly intercede for us before the Holy Trinity.
