24 June |
24 June - The birth of the Holy and Glorious Forerunner and Prophet John the Baptist is commemorated.
His parents were Zechariah, a priest, and Elizabeth.
The story of his conception and birth is told in Lk. 1:1-80.
The Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Prophet and Glorious Forerunner John the Baptist is one day longer than nine months after The Feast of the Conception of the Forerunner and Prophet John the Baptist on 23 September.
The only feast of a conception and a birth that are exactly nine months apart is the Great Feast of The Annunciation of The Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary (25 March) and the Great Feast of Nativity According to the Flesh of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ (25 December). The reason is because only God is perfect.
24 June is 6 months and 1 day before the commemoration of the Great Feast of the Nativity According to the Flesh of Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 25 December.
KONTAKION (TONE 4)
O Prophet & Forerunner of the Coming of Christ, in spite of our eagerness to render you due honor, we fall short when singing your praise. Your glorious birth saved your mother from the shame of barrenness, returned to your father the power of speech, and proclaimed to the world the Incarnation of Christ.
TROPARION (TONE 4)
The head of the Forerunner arose from the earth like a star, sending out rays of healing and immortality. In heaven, it gathers together the choirs of angels, while on earth it assembles the human race in a single voice to sing the glory of Christ God.
