Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center Memorial Service / Jennaz with the Evlogitaria of the Dead

The "Evlogitaria" asks for the forgiveness of the sins of the departed servant(s) of God and asks the Lord to admit his or her soul into the heavenly mansions. The "Evlogitaria" is sung in the Fifth Tone.

Liturgical Text

Two "Evlogitaria of the Dead" Liturgical Texts are presented.

Text of the "Funeral Service" in the Byzantine Melkite Euchologion, which was published by the Eparchy of Newton (Our Lady of the Annunciation (Al Bisharah) in Roslindale, Massachusetts)

The Refrain is the following:

Engish - "Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me your statues."
Arabic - "Mubarakon anta ya Rabb alemni roosoomak."

The "Evlogitaria" has two versions.

"Evlogitaria of the Dead"

Monday thru Saturday.
All Souls Saturdays.

"Evlogitaria of the Resurrection"

Sundays
Memorial Services on Sundays are celebrations of the Resurrection or Pascha.

The Greek word "Evlogitaria"

The Greek word "Evlogitaria" is the plural of the Greek word "Evlogitarion". The word "Evlogitaria" comes from the first word of the refrain in Greek: "Evlogos" or "Eulogos". (The "u" in Greek is often pronounced "v" or even "f".) "Evlogos" or "Eulogos" means "bless" or "blessed" or "blessing". "Evlogos" or "Eulogos" combines the prefix "eu" to the word "logos". The prefix "eu" means "good" or "beautiful" and the word "logos" means "word". A "good word" or a "beautiful word" is a "bless" or "blessed" or "blessing". Sometimes "eulogos" has the similar meanings of "praise" or "prayer".
In English, the word "eulogy" comes from the same root.

When the Memorial Service / Jennaz celebrated with a Divine Liturgy

The Memorial Service / Jennaz is celebrated after the last prayer of the Divine Liturgy and before the Kissing of the Cross.

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center is dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles), Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck), and Donna (Donna Bertha Liles Campbell). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000, Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001, and Donna fell asleep in the Lord on March 9, 2020.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
