This Prayer for the Naming of a Child text is from Byzantine Melkite Euchologion published by the Eparchy of Newton (Our Lady of the Annunciation (Al Bisharah) in Roslindale, MA), Roslindale, Massachusetts, United States. This book is available from Sophia Press, Eparchy of Newton (Our Lady of the Annunciation (Al Bisharah) in Roslindale, Massachusetts, United States)

On the eighth day after birth the baby is brought to the doors of the Church i.e. in the Narthex, :And the priest begins with the blessing.

Priest: Blessed is our God, at all times, now and always and forever and ever.

Reader: Amen.

Holy God, Holy Might One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us! (Three times)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

All Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, forgive us our sins. Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, look upon us and heal our infirmities for your name's sake.

Lord, have mercy. (Three times)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For thine is the kingdom and the power and glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever.

Reader: Amen. (Followed by the Troparion of the day)

The priest makes the sign of the cross over the forehead, lips and chest of the child, and then says the following prayer:

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.

Reader: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: O Lord our God, we pray to You and we beseech You that the light of your countenance may be imprinted upon your servant (handmaid) (Name) and the cross of your only-begotten Son may be engraved in his (her) heart and in his (her) thoughts; the he (she) may flee the folly of the world, and from every evil plight of the enemy and follow your commandments. Grant, O Lord, that your holy name may remain unrejected by him (her); and that in due time, he (she) may be united to your holy Church and the awesome mysteries of your Christ may be administered to him (her); that having lived according to your commandments and preserved the seal unbroken, he (she) may receive the bliss of the elect in your kingdom.

Through the grace and love for mankind of your only-begotten Son, with whom You are blessed, together with your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and forever and ever.

Reader: Amen.

The taking the infant in his arms, the p;riest stands before the holy doors or before the Icon of the Mother of God and makes the sign of the cross with the child saying:

Priest: HAIL, O WOMAN full of grace, Virgin and Mother of God: from you has arisen the Sun of Justice, Christ our God, enlightening those who stand in darkness. You too, just Elder Simeon, rejoice, for you carried in your arms the Redeemer of our souls, our Resurrection.

Priest: Glory to You, O Christ God, our hope, Glory to You! May Christ our true God have mercy on us and save us through the prayers of his all-pure Mother, of his holy and glorious Apostles who are worthy of all praise, and of all the saints, for He is good and loves mankind.

Through die prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us.

Reader: Amen.

O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
