Nicean Creed

"I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotton Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages: Light of light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man; who was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried; who rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is enthroned at the right hand of the Father; who will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; and of whose kingdom there shall be no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I profess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come." Amen.

What the Nicean Creed does

The Nicean Creed proclaims our belief and faith in Holy God.

• An affirmation of our personal faith
• The public proclamation of Holy God's Truth and the living experience of his People, the Church
• An expression of all that has been revealed to us by Holy God through Holy Scripture, Holy Tradition, and Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ

Why the Nicean Creed was Written

By the fourth century, many heresies (false teachings) about Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ, Holy God the Holy Spirit had developed. The purpose of the Nicean Creed was to state the Truth and to combat these heresies.

The Nicean Creed was written by the First Ecumenical Council and the Second Ecumenical Council

The First Ecumenical Council also named Council of Nicaea I in 325 produced the first portion of the Nicean Creed.

The Second Ecumenical Council also named Council of Constantinople I in 381 produced the second and final portion of the Nicean Creed.

The Nicean Creed is said during the Divine Liturgy.

Name

This prayer is called "Creed" from the Latin word "credo", which is the first word of the Creed. "credo" means "I believe". This Creed is called the "Nicean Creed" after the Council of Nicea I, (325) which produce the first portion. This Creed is also called the "Nicean-Constantinopolitan Creed" after the Council of Nicea and the Council of Constantinople I, (381), which produce the second portion.

Melkite Greek Catholic Church Information Center is dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles) and Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000 and Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
