1 August - The Church celebrates the Feast of the Procession of the Holy Cross.
We rejoice in Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ's transformation of a tree of death into the Tree of Life, from an instrument of humiliation into a sign of victory over sin and death.
The Holy Cross is a symbol of suffering and sacrifice leading ultimately to redemption, resurrection, and new life. For this reason, we wear the Holy Cross around our necks, hang the Holy Cross in our homes, sign ourselves with the Holy Cross.
In the Gospels, Holy God the Son within the Holy Trinity / Our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ tells us we must take up our crosses and follow Him.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, there is a procession with the priest holding the Holy Cross. The priest blesses the people with the Holy Cross. Then the people come forward to the solea and venerate the Holy Cross. The tradtional veneration is a Great Prostration (Metany), which is kneeling and touching the forehead to the floor, then standing and making the Sign of the Cross.
KONTAKION (TONE 2)
Christ our God, who chose by your free volition to be elevated upon the Holy Cross, grant your mercies to your new people who are called by your name.
In your power gladden the hearts of our public authorities.
Strengthen them in every good deed so that your true alliance may be for them
a weapon of peace and a standard of victory.
1 - 14 August - Traditionally, in Constantinople, the Holy Cross was carried in procession to all the churches for the people to venerate.
1 - 14 August - The Church traditionally observes a period of fasting for the Great Feast of the Dormition of The Theotokos. This fast is also called "Our Lady's Fast". This fast begins just before the Vespers of 1 August on 30 September evening. This fast ends just before Vespers for the Great Feast of the Dormition of The Theotokos on 14 August evening.

dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles) and Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000 and Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
