He was a hermit and a monk in Egypt. This Sunday, 16 January, we will commemorate our Father Among the Saints Anthony the Great. His feast day is actually 17 January. He is recognized as the founder of Christian monasticism. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 251, he renounced his wealth and went into the desert, where he lived as a hermit, battling temptation and praying constantly. His holiness attracted many disciples and imitators. He died at the age of 105. Happy name-day to all those named for St Anthony.Biography17 January - In 251, Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great was born of noble and weathy parents in Alexandria. As youth, he became an orphan. St. Antony renounced hiswealth, sold his possessions, gave his money to the poor, and went into the desert willderness. There, he he lived as a hermit, prayed constantly, battled temptation, meditated, and did manual work. Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great's holiness attracted many disciples and imitators. He was imitated in Eqypt, Libya, Palestine, and Syria. On January 17, 356, Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great died at the age of 105.
