Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great
Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great was one of the founders of monastic life. He was a hermit and a monk in Egypt.
This Sunday, 16 January, we will commemorate our Father Among the Saints Anthony the Great. His feast day is actually 17 January. He is recognized as the founder of Christian monasticism. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 251, he renounced his wealth and went into the desert, where he lived as a hermit, battling temptation and praying constantly. His holiness attracted many disciples and imitators. He died at the age of 105. Happy name-day to all those named for St Anthony.Biography
17 January - In 251, Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great was born of noble and weathy parents in Alexandria. As youth, he became an orphan. St. Antony renounced hiswealth, sold his possessions, gave his money to the poor, and went into the desert willderness. There, he he lived as a hermit, prayed constantly, battled temptation, meditated, and did manual work. Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great's holiness attracted many disciples and imitators. He was imitated in Eqypt, Libya, Palestine, and Syria. On January 17, 356, Holy and God-bearing Father Antony the Great died at the age of 105.

dedicated to my cousins: Bucky (Richard C. Liles) and Shirley (Shirley Jean Liles Buck). Bucky fell asleep in the Lord on Dec. 12, 2000 and Shirley fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001.
O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who have destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant, O Lord, to the souls of your servants Bucky and Shirley, who has departed from this life, that it may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing. And since You are a gracious God and the Lover of Mankind, forgive him/her every sin he/she has committed by thought, or word, or deed, for there is not a man who lives and does not sin : You alone are without sin, your righteousness is everlasting, and your word is true. You are the Resurrection and the Life, and the repose of your departed servants Bucky and Shirley. O Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, together with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-givng Spirit, now and always and for ages upon ages. Amen.
